Summary

This programme of study is seen as a two-year course and consists of both the Level 3 Diploma and the Level 3 Extended Diploma in Agriculture. In your first year you will study aspects such as crop production, health and safety, plant and soil science and land-based machinery operations. In the second year you are able to specialise and pick either the Arable or Livestock pathway. These discrete routes will allow you to follow your passion for topics such as combinable crop production, spreaders and sprayers and root crop production within the arable specialism and sheep production, beef production and forage crop production on the livestock pathway.

Entry Requirements

You will need to have achieved four GCSEs at Grades 9- 4 including English, Maths and Science or an appropriate Level 2 qualification at Merit with Maths and English at a minimum of Grade 4 if you wish to undertake this course.

Assessment

Assessment is varied during the two years and will include practical observation, examinations, and written assignments.

Progression

On successful completion of the two-year programme, you may wish to progress onto an Advanced/Higher Apprenticeship or further learning within a Higher Education Institution. You could study courses such as:

  • Agriculture with Animal Science BSc (Hons) Degree

  • Agriculture with Business Studies BSc (Hons) Degree

Career Progression

This two-year qualification exposes you to the whole industry, and the opportunities within it. On completion, it is likely that you will enter the industry by working for a farm business, or as a farming contractor. As you will have gained a breadth and depth of skills and knowledge over a very wide range of units, you could progress within work to become a:

  • Herdsperson

  • Shepherd/ess

  • Contractor (livestock)

  • Assistant Poultry Unit Manager

In the arable pathway

  • Contractor (crops)

  • Agricultural technician

  • Fixed plant manager

  • Sprayer operator
