Diploma in Public Services Level 3
- September 2022, Full Time
The course is designed to stretch students both academically and physically and prepare them for their future careers in the uniformed public services.
Students will study the NCFE Level Three Diploma for Entry to the Uniformed Services
The course will allow students to explore a variety of uniformed public services and the job opportunities each one presents. This is achieved through academic study, exposure to serving members of the uniformed public services and participating in a variety of practical and physical activities.
An emphasis on personal development is key to students successfully completing the course. Throughout the course students are challenged to enable them to achieve their maximum potential and ensure they have the correct skillset required, when entering the uniformed public services.
On completion of the Diploma students can opt to further their knowledge by progressing onto the Extended Diploma.
Previous Courses have had the following opportunities:
Residential courses hosted by several of the armed forces.
Visits to operational command centres.
Guest speakers from both the blue light and armed forces.
Please not these were prior to COVID restrictions
A minimum of five GCSEs at Grade 4 or above, including maths and/or English.
Alternatively, a Level 2 qualification in public services at Merit or above, plus GCSE English and maths at Grade 4 or above.
Students must be prepared to participate in physical and practical sessions, which at times will emulate industry standards. You will need to demonstrate a keen interest in the course and have an understanding of work carried out by the Uniformed Public Services.
Students suitability will be assessed on an individual basis.
The course is modular. Students will study units such as:
Prepare for a career in a chosen uniformed service.
Develop aspects of physical fitness for entry to the uniformed services.
Develop leadership skills.
Equality, diversity and inclusion.
Carry out map reading and navigation across open country.
Understand conflict management and personal protection.
Although there is no minimum level of fitness required to join the course, there is an expectation that students will improve their overall fitness levels and achieve the minimum standard requirements of their chosen service. Students will achieve this by participating in activities such as team sports, adventurous training, and physical training sessions mirroring that of the Public Services.
This course is delivered through a combination of lectures, self-directed study, tutorials, and workshops. Learning sessions will take place in the classroom, gymnasium, fitness suite and outdoor venues.
Assessment is carried out throughout the academic year by the departmental staff. Students will be expected to compile reports, carry out individual research, present information to both their peers and teaching staff and complete both practical based activities and scenarios. This varied approach to assessment is designed to promote independence and encourage individuals to take ownership of their own learning.
Upon successful completion of this course at Merit or above, students can opt to continue their studies by applying for Extended Diploma in Public Services. Other progression opportunities include Higher Education including our BA (Hons) in Professional Policing, Apprenticeship or Employment.
Students completing the course will have the necessary tools to apply for entry into either the blue light services or armed forces. Having close links with the civilian security sector students may progress into this field as another option.
If you are under 19 years old on the 31st August prior to the start of your course, your registration and tuition fees will be funded by the government. In addition to this there will be costs for a uniform, approximately £100. Students may also be required to contribute to off site visits and trips.
