Summary
The course looks to develop an understanding of a variety of key principles in sport, covering fitness, development and coaching as specific areas of focus. The course is a 2 year programme. In year 1 you will be completing the BTEC Level 3 Foundation Diploma in Sport, and in year 2, you will be completing the full BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport qualification.
The purpose of the Level 3 Sports Development and Leadership is to develop and progress students towards their intended career pathway of working within development and leadership within the sports industry. Bridging any knowledge gaps from finishing GCSEs to their course. The course looks to develop an understanding of a variety of key principles in sport, covering fitness, development, practical sports and coaching as specific areas of focus. The course is a 2 year programme. In year 1 you will be completing the BTEC Level 3 Foundation Diploma in Sport, and in year 2, you will be completing the full BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport qualification.
During their academic journey students will be provided with opportunities and experiences which will aid their development and help them engage with those from the industry they are aiming to become part of.
Year 1 Units: Anatomy and Physiology, Fitness Training, Professional Development, Sports Leadership, Practical Sports Performance, Sports Psychology and Organising and Sports Event.
Example Year 2 Units: Coaching for Performance, Research Methods, Sports Development, Investigating Business, Skill Acquisition.
Your timetable will also consist of tutorial sessions, learning support sessions and (if required) English and Maths.
Entry Requirements
5 GCSE’s at grade 4 and above (including English Language and Mathematics).
If a progressing level 2 student, you will be required to have finished your level 2 with a Merit overall and must have passed either GCSE Maths or English Language.
If offered a conditional offer this will be on the grounds of completing the following:
Completion of tasks (sent out following a taster session/interview)
Two complete references (School and Sports Coach/PE Teacher)

The courses is assessed in a variety of ways, which include:
4 x External Exams over the course (2 in year 1, and 2 in year 2)

Interviews
Some of the units you will assessed in over the 2 year programme include; Anatomy and Physiology, Fitness Training, Sports Leadership, Sports Development and Provision, Coaching for Performance, Skill Acquisition, Research Methods and Practical Sport.
Progression
Progression from the course can include: studying at a higher education level (degree), apprenticeships or going into industry having gained sport and leisure related employment.
Career Progression
Some of the career destinations include; Sports Coach, PE Teacher, Sports Development Officer, Sports Enrichment, Performance Analyst, Activities Leader and a Fitness Instructor.
