Summary

At Easton College, the Performance and Excellence programme aims to progress and promote students to make advances in their English and Maths, as well as the vocation of Sport. This is aimed at capturing the essential skills of managing self; managing relationships with others; and managing own learning, performance and work. It is these skills that will enable young people to enter work and adult life confident and capable.

The Performance and Excellence programme provides a platform to develop knowledge, skills, and experiences within the sport sector, supporting progression into a more specialised level 3 vocational or academic course or into an apprenticeship. As a student of the Performance and Excellence programme, you will begin to adopt the College’s Ways of Working and actively participate in opportunities to develop skills in English and mathematics, embedded in your units of study. Staff will give learners the opportunity to practise these essential skills in naturally occurring and meaningful contexts, appropriate to the sport sector.

Students will study a Level 2 Certificate in Sport and then be able to access a specialist performance pathway. The Performance and Excellence Pathways you can choose from include:

  • Football
  • Rugby
  • Golf
  • Gifted and Talented (competing at county, regional, national or international level in a specific sport).

This performance pathway may include:

  • 2-3 x Training Sessions per week
  • 1 x Strength and Conditioning session per week
  • Access to fixtures and competitions
  • Access to Injury Prevention and Rehabilitation
  • Access to Video Analysis Equipment and Software

Course Length: 1 academic year
Days of the week: 5 days inclusive of Vocational Qualification, English , Maths and Sport Specific Training/ Competitions.

Entry Requirements

A minimum of four GCSE's at Grade 3 including English Language and Maths.
You must be performing to a minimum of club level with aspirations to participate at the highest level for your ability. Evidence of this, along with references will be required.

For progressing students, a Level 1 qualification plus two Level 1 Functional Skills or equivalent. In addition, students must have a good assessment, behaviour and attendance record.

Assessment

You will be assessed through a variety of methods including some externally assessed core units and internally assessed mandatory and optional units. Assessment methods could include assignments, research projects, presentations, roles players, group discussions.

Units of Study may include:

Semester 1:

Unit 1 – Fitness for Sport , Exercise (Exam)

Unit 7 – Anatomy , Physiology (Exam)

Unit 2 – Practical Sport Performance

Semester 2:

Unit 3 – The Mind , Sport Performance

Unit 6 – Leading Sport Activities

Unit 14 – Carry out a sport-related project

Semester 3:

U24 – Work Experience in Sport

U19 – Practical Land-based activities

Progression

The BTEC Level 1/Level 2 First Certificate, Extended Certificate and Diploma in Sport provide the knowledge, skills and understanding for Level 2 learners to progress to:
other Level 2 vocational qualifications and related competence-based qualifications for the Sport sector
Level 3 vocational qualifications, such as BTEC Nationals, specifically the Pearson BTEC Level 3 National in Sport.

To progress onto a Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport, students will need to achieve an overall Merit (which includes a L2 Pass minimum in the Anatomy and Physiology exam) and English and maths at grade 4 or above.

Career Progression

Throughout your time at Easton, the course aims to:

Provide a platform to showcase their knowledge and skills of sport, leadership and development, in preparation for your next positive destination. These experiences will be gained alongside Norfolk Schools Sports Partnership, Community Sport Foundation, Active Norfolk, Easton Higher Education, and AOC Sport, as well as other members of the college and local community through internal and external visits.

Give learners the potential opportunity, in due course, to enter employment within a wide range of junior job roles across the sport development and leadership sector. Junior job roles include: Community Sport Coach, Activity Leader or Multi-Sport Coach.

With these points considered, the course also intends for each student to make new positive connections within their community and be a valued, effective member of society.

Fees

If you are a UK or home fee status student and aged 16-18 on the 31st August before the start of your course, tuition fees are free. If you are aged 19 and over fees may be payable.

There will be costs for uniform of approximately £100 and specific pathway fees.
