Summary

This course is supported by the charity of The Worshipful Company of Basket Makers. it is based on 8 sessions in total. You will learn the skills and techniques required with this heritage craft, where each session you will take home what you have made in group. This will include 4 starter activities and 5 baskets.
The course structure will be as follows;

  • Session1 - Introduction to materials, Types of willow, Tension Trays, Wreathes, Willow Hearts and Willow Stars
  • Session2 - The process of coppicing, propogation, Working with green willow, Living willow structures, Fedging
  • Session3 - Frame Basketry, Berry Basket, Gods Eye Lashings, Lashings
  • Session4 - Stake and strand basketry, Making the base, Slath, Paired Weave, Make several bases to be used in further baskets
  • Session5 -Stake and strand basketry, Staking up, 3 Rod Whale, Paired Weave, French Rand, Border
  • Session6 - Handles, Contemporary Handles, Contemporary Baskets, Weaving a contemporary shopping basket
  • Session 7 - Oval baskets, Creating the oval base, Staking up and weaving the sides, Choosing and making a handle
  • Session 8 - Lantern making, Wild weaving, Creating a Willow Ball
    You will need to purchase, secateurs, small shop knife, Bodkin and Wrapping Iron

Entry Requirements

This course requires a certain level of fitness as you will need to have a firm grip.

Learning Outcomes

At completion of the course, participants will have become competent with all the main techniques of round and oval basket making, aiming for work of a saleable standard. They will have gained sufficient skill and knowledge to be able to move forward as makers, or to continue enjoying basketry as a hobby.
