Summary

Advanced Carpenters and Joiners work with wood-based materials to create and install components, and undertake complex tasks. This apprenticeship includes 2 different pathways and you will either work on a construction site as an Advanced Site Carpenter or in a workshop as an Advanced Architectural Joiner:
Pathway 1: Advanced Site Carpenters usually work on building sites or in domestic/ commercial premises, preparing and installing complex and bespoke components e.g. high quality doors, shaped linings, staircases with turns, complex units, erecting bespoke structural carpentry (inclined roofs and joists) and complex roof structures (e.g. inclined roofs with hips, valleys and dormers).
Pathway 2: Advanced Architectural Joiners will usually work in a workshop, producing complex building components by setting out, marking out and manufacturing bespoke products (e.g. doors, windows, staircases with turns and panelling/ cladding).

Course content includes:

  • Core duties, skills and competencies (both pathways)
  • Core knowledge units (both pathways)
  • All behaviours to be displayed by all skilled workers

You will complete the Level 3 Craft Carpentry and Joinery Apprenticeship Standard.

  • This apprenticeship will involve college attendance and off the job training.
  • You will develop your knowledge, skills and behaviours.
  • You need to have an employer to support your apprenticeship and be employed in a relevant job role.
  • The typical length of this course is 18 months.
  • This course is based at our Easton campus and has multiple entry points.

Entry Requirements

  • GCSE Grade 4/C in Maths and English (Language or Literature) or Level 2 Functional Skills in Maths and English
    In order to enrol onto an apprenticeship, you need to be employed in a relevant job role and undertake a range of tasks which would enable you to complete the apprenticeship qualification.

Learning Outcomes

For the full apprenticeship, candidates will complete:

  • Level 3 Craft Carpentry and Joinery Apprenticeship Standard
  • NVQ Level 3 Diploma in Wood Occupations- Site Carpentry OR
  • NVQ Level 3 Diploma in Wood Occupations- Architectural Joinery
  • If not previously achieved, Level 2 in English and Maths (if not exempt)

Assessment

Training and assessments are delivered in the workplace and in college. Apprentices will be required to attend college-based sessions as part of their training, whilst also completing off-the-job training in the workplace. You will also complete assessments and observations in the workplace.

You will need to complete Level 2 Maths and English before the End Point Assessment (EPA).

  • 1- hour multiple choice knowledge test
  • 1- day practical assessment consisting of 4 tasks, plus questioning from an independent assessor
  • 75- minute interview with an independent assessor

Progression

On completion of this standard, apprentices will progress to a wide range of employment opportunities, or move onto full or part-time further education.

Career Progression

The achievement of this standard will meet the requirement of the Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) ‘Advanced Skilled Worker’ standard, which is widely recognised as a ‘licence to operate’ in a skilled construction trade.

Fees

July 2024, Apprenticeship, Day

Apprenticeship course fees are subject to the age of the apprentice, and the size of the company.
 
For employers with less than 50 employees who do not pay the apprenticeship levy and who take on an apprentice who is aged between 16-21 at the start of their apprenticeship, there will be no direct cost and the full training costs will be covered by Government funding. If the apprentice is aged 22+ the government partially subsides the training costs and the employer will need to pay 5% of the costs. In the case of this course, the fee would be £650.
 
For an employer with more than 50 employees a 5% charge will be implemented regardless of the age of the apprentice which in this case would be £650.
 
A levy paying company will pay the full cost of the apprenticeship from their levy account which in this case would be £13,000.
 
Please note that course fees are to be paid by the employer and apprentices cannot be asked to make a financial contribution toward their training.
