What You Will Study
The Healthcare Assistant Practitioner apprenticeship at City College Norwich has been developed in collaboration with local NHS Trusts and requires employers to fund and support apprentices for the duration of their programme. This programme aims to provide, supervise and coordinate high-quality, person- centred and compassionate health and social care for a wide range of people.
The role is based across a range of settings and health and care services, such as diagnostics, mental health and learning needs. Healthcare Assistant Practitioners will assist registered professionals in assessing patients and coordinating their care, including referrals to other professionals and undertaking clinical, diagnostic and therapeutic activities. You will learn how to manage your own caseload and how to be accountable for your own actions. Communcation is key and you will need to follow strict regulations, legislation and procedures.
You will complete the Level 5 Healthcare Assistant Practitioner (Health Studies) Apprenticeship Standard.
This apprenticeship will involve college attendance and off the job training.
You will also develop your knowledge, skills and behaviours.
You need to have an employer to support your apprenticeship and must be employed in a relevant job role.
The typical length of this apprenticeship course is 24 months.

Entry Requirements
NHS Trusts select potential apprentices and candidates are interviewed jointly during the admissions protocol. If a learner has not achieved English or Maths at Level 2 (4/C or above at GCSE or Functional Skills Level 2), they may have to attend Functional Skills sessions, in line with apprenticeship funding rules, and the employer. If required, these Functional Skills sessions will be held on an additional day to their regular college attendance.
Candidates must also have their Care Certificate.
Fees
September 2025, Apprenticeship, Day
Apprenticeship course fees are subject to the age of the apprentice, and the size of the company.
For employers with less than 50 employees who do not pay the apprenticeship levy and who take on an apprentice who is aged between 16-21 at the start of their apprenticeship, there will be no direct cost and the full training costs will be covered by Government funding. If the apprentice is aged 22+ the government partially subsides the training costs and the employer will need to pay 5% of the costs. In the case of this course, the fee would be £700.
For an employer with more than 50 employees a 5% charge will be implemented regardless of the age of the apprentice which in this case would be £700.
A levy paying company will pay the full cost of the apprenticeship from their levy account which in this case would be £14,000.
Please note that course fees are to be paid by the employer and apprentices must not be asked to make a financial contribution toward their training.
