New courses offer pathways to a career in policing

City College Norwich has launched two new courses in policing that offer new pathways to careers in the Police. The Access to HE: Criminal Justice & Policing and BA (Hons) in Policing courses are now taking applications for 2021.

Access to Higher Education: Criminal Justice and Policing

The Access to Higher Education: Criminal Justice and Policing course will provide an intensive preparation for the requirements of the degree level programme. Starting in January 2021, it is for people aged 19 and over who do not yet have a Level 3 qualification (A Levels or equivalent).

Access courses provide an established and well-understood route to degree level study. They play an important role in opening degree level study to a wide cross section of people of varying ages, with different levels of prior educational attainment, and a wide variety of employment histories (including those who may have been out of work due to family or caring responsibilities). BA (Hons) in Policing

Starting in September 2021, this three-year, full-time degree course, will provide a thorough grounding in the core elements of police work, including policing legislation and procedures, criminal investigations, policing communities, response and roads policing and evidence-based policing and research methods.

The degree course, in line with City College Norwich’s other Honours degrees, will be validated and awarded by its university partner, the University of East Anglia (UEA). Who are the courses for?

The new courses will be of particular interest to anyone who has started out on a different career path and is interested in making the switch to policing, as well as young people who are currently studying Public Services courses or A Levels at college.  

The two courses will be run at Easton College, part of City College Norwich, and students may also undertake some training at Norfolk Constabulary’s new training centre in Hethersett which is due to open in full at the beginning of next year.  

Making police careers accessible 

These new routes into policing are an important part of Norfolk’s response to two key national priorities for the police workforce: professionalising the service so that a degree-level qualification becomes part of the training for all new police constables; and a drive to increase the diversity of the workforce and ensure that the service is more representative of the communities it serves.
