Designed for aspiring fitness professionals, this practical and engaging course will provide you with the knowledge, skills, and confidence needed to work as a Gym Instructor within the health and fitness industry.
Throughout the programme, you will develop an understanding of exercise and fitness principles, health screening, client consultations, gym inductions, exercise planning, and the safe delivery of gym-based exercise sessions. You will gain valuable hands-on experience working with individuals and small groups, preparing you for employment in gyms, leisure centres, health clubs, and other fitness environments.
Assessment is carried out through a combination of practical activities, case studies, professional discussions, and the planning, delivery, and evaluation of exercise sessions, allowing you to demonstrate your skills in realistic industry settings.
The course runs over approximately 23 weeks, with classes taking place on Tuesday evenings from 5pm to 9pm. In addition, learners will attend one full training day during the October half-term and one full training day during the February half-term. Students are also expected to dedicate around two hours per week to self-directed study outside of timetabled sessions to support their learning and completion of the qualification.
Upon successful completion, learners will achieve the YMCA Level 2 Extended Technical Occupational Entry in Exercise and Fitness: Gym Instructor Diploma, providing a strong foundation for employment within the fitness sector or progression to further qualifications in personal training and specialist fitness disciplines.
Entry Requirements
You must be aged 19 or over to complete this course. Ideally you will have some experience of gym-based exercises as participation in a variety of gym-based practical sessions will be required throughout the qualification. You should also have communication skills pitched at Level 2 which can be developed during the course. You will be required to commit to self-directed study in order to achieve this qualification.
You will be required to have an interview with the course leader before enrolment.
How You Will Be Assessed
A range of assessments will be conducted on this course.
Course Progression
This Level 2 qualification can lead to employment as a gym instructor. This qualification can also lead to further training at the same or higher levels including: Level 2 award in group exercise instructing and Level 3 diploma in personal training.
