Summary

An Operations/ Departmental Manager is someone who manages teams and/ or projects and achieves operational or departmental goals and objectives as part of the delivery of the organisation’s strategy. By the end of the course, learners will be better prepared to manage teams and individuals, setting appropriate targets and facilitating effective working practices. The curriculum also covers personal development and project management.

Apprentices will acquire the knowledge, behaviour and skills in the following areas through completing the Chartered Management Institute (CMI) Level 5 Diploma in Management and Leadership* qualification:

  • Operational and project management

  • Finance

  • Leading and managing people

  • Building relationships

  • Communication

  • Awareness and management of self

  • Decision making

  • Taking responsibility, being inclusive, agile and professional

  • Certification for the CMI qualification will be at an additional cost.

You will complete the Level 5 Operations/ Departmental Manager Apprenticeship Standard.

  • This apprenticeship will involve college attendance and off the job training.
  • You will also develop your knowledge, skills and behaviours.
  • You need to have an employer to support your apprenticeship and be employed in a relevant job role.
  • The typical length of this apprenticeship is 24 months.
  • The next intake is in September 2025 and the course is delivered at Norfolk House, in Norwich city centre.

Entry Requirements

  • GCSE Grade 4/C in Maths and English (Language or Literature) or Level 2 Functional Skills in Maths and English
  • If a learner has not achieved English or Maths at Level 2 (4/C or above at GCSE or Functional Skills Level 2), they will have to attend Functional Skills sessions which will be held on an additional day to their regular college attendance.
  • Candidates must also be employed in an appropriate job role and have a Level 3 (or higher) qualification, such as A-Levels.
  • Candidates must attend an interview with the Delivery Team as part of the application process. Interviews typically take place in August.

The following modules are covered as part of this apprenticeship:

  • Unit 501- Principles of operational Leadership and Management in an organisational context
  • Unit 502- Principles of developing, managing and leading individuals and teams to achieve success
  • Unit 509- Managing stakeholder relationships
  • Unit 513- Managing projects to achieve results
  • Unit 514- Managing change
  • Unit 515- Creating and delivering operational plans
  • Unit 520- Managing finance
  • Unit 525- Using reflective practice to inform personal and professional development (please see www.managers.org.uk for further details on the content of these modules)

The Level 5 Diploma in Management and Leadership is designed for managers who want to develop core management skills such as managing resources, recruitment and information management. The qualification focuses on the development of management capabilities and competencies. This apprenticeship is awarded by the Chartered Management Institute (CMI).

Upon successful completion of the course, learners will be awarded with a Level 5 Operations/ Departmental Manager Apprenticeship Standard, which includes the following:

  • CMI Level 5 Diploma in Leadership & Management.
  • If exempt or not previously achieved, Level 2 in English and Maths.

Assessment

Training and assessments are delivered in the workplace and in college. Apprentices will be required to attend college-based sessions as part of their training, whilst also completing off-the-job training in the workplace. You will also complete assessments and observations in the workplace.

At the end of the apprenticeship, the apprentice will be ready for the End Point Assessment (EPA) which includes:

  • 60- minute professional discussion with an independent assessor, underpinned by the portfolio of evidence
  • Project proposal, presentation (20 minutes) and questioning (40 minutes) with an independent assessor

Progression

Upon successful completion of this apprenticeship, apprentices may consider further continuation, development or promotion at work or within this sector.

Career Progression

This well- recognised qualification will enhance your ability to contribute effectively to your organisation and thus the possibility of progression into supervisory/ management roles. On completion, apprentices can register as full members with the Chartered Management Institute (CMI). As part of the End Point Assessment (EPA) apprentices will be assessed for Foundation Manager or Chartered Manager status, depending on the length of their management experience.

Fees

Apprenticeship course fees are subject to the age of the apprentice, and the size of the company.
 
For employers with less than 50 employees who do not pay the apprenticeship levy and who take on an apprentice who is aged between 16-21 at the start of their apprenticeship, there will be no direct cost and the full training costs will be covered by Government funding. If the apprentice is aged 22+ the government partially subsides the training costs and the employer will need to pay 5% of the costs. In the case of this course, the fee would be £350.
 
For an employer with more than 50 employees a 5% charge will be implemented regardless of the age of the apprentice which in this case would be £350.
 
A levy paying company will pay the full cost of the apprenticeship from their levy account which in this case would be £7,000.
 
Please note that course fees are to be paid by the employer and apprentices must not be asked to make a financial contribution toward their training.
