Summary
This 2 year Program of Study consists of a Level 3 Technical Extended Diploma Animal Management (Science Pathway) and ideal for students wishing to progress into veterinary and research careers.
The first year covers a range of practical skills and knowledge that builds your core skills to work around animals, including how to work safely around animals, be responsible for planning and carrying out animal husbandry, health and handling. You will also learn about animal behaviour, welfare and biology. Working in our modern college facilities, students will develop their practical skills, including cleaning out accommodation, feeding and watering animals, grooming and exercise.
In the second year students will focus on core science units, including Animal Nursing, Chemistry for Biological Technicians, Cell Biology and Genetics, Biochemistry and Microbiology.
The Program of Study combines the City and Guilds Level 3 Technical Extended Diploma in Animal Management (Science pathway), with work experience and weekend duties.
Students will need to purchase their PPE for the Animal Management Centre. Details with what is required will be provided at enrolment. Students will work in all weather conditions, both indoors and outdoors, ensuring our animals are provided with the highest welfare standards.

Entry Requirements
Students wishing to undertake this course require 5 GCSEs at Grade 6, including Science, English and Maths.
Progressing students require a relevant Level 2 qualification at Merit or above, plus GCSEs in English and Maths at Grade 6 or above.

In year 1, you will complete your core units, including:

- Work placement (minimum 150 hours)
In year 2, you will complete the following units:
- Animal Nursing
- Chemistry for Biological Technicians
- Cell Biology and Genetics
- Biochemistry and Microbiology
- Science Investigation and Report Writing

Assessment
To achieve the Level 3 in Animal Science, students need to complete all the following components:
Year 1:
- Animal Management Synoptic assignment
- Animal Management Theory exam
- Health and Safety Theory exam
- Biology Theory exam
- Theory and practical assignments
- 150 hours of work experience and a portfolio
Year 2:
- Animal Management Synoptic assignment
- Animal Management Theory exam
- Specialist project in the land-based sector
- Theory and practical assignments
- Employer engagement
Progression
On successful completion of the Level 3 Technical Extended Diploma in Animal Management (Science Pathway) you may wish to progress on to Higher Education or an apprenticeship to study Veterinary Nursing or Veterinary Medicine.
